How To Fix The Citrix License Acquisition Error (500)

In this guide I will describe the symptoms of the error “Citrix License Acquisition Error (500)” and also what you need to check / do to fix the error “Citrix License Acquisition Error (500)”

Symptoms

You receive a Citrix License Acquisition Error (500) or “Citrix Presentation Server license acquisition error (-25): Unable to acquire a license from <server name> server. Please contact your system administrator or open Event Viewer for more details.” when logging on to the server.



Systems AffectedThe citrix systems that are affected are, Citrix Presentation Server Version 4.5 (I dont think Ver 4.0 is affected) Xen App 4.0, 4.5, 5.0

Resolution For Citrix License Acquisition Error (500)

 server make sure the IMA, Metaframe COM and Citrix SMA services are running, if they are restart them and try to connect again. Log on to your citrix license server, make sure the 2 citrix licensing services are running.

Upgrade your license server to 11.6 or later. Go to download.citrix.com. Log on to the Web site with your mycitrite.com credentials. Install on your existing licensing server. Restart the Licensing Server service in Windows Services.

Make sure the windows time / date is correct on your citrix presentation / xenapp server and license server.  If the time / date is wrong by 24 hours it could cause problems.

Have your citrix subscription licenses expired? If they have renew them.  Has the citrix evaluation license run out?

Are you getting the following error in the eventlog?

“Event ID: 12313

Type: Warning

User: N/A

Source: CPSLicensing

Category: None

Description: Citrix Presentation Server license acquisition error (-25): This license cannot be fulfilled because either the license does not support this product version, or your Subscription Advantage has expired. Please ask your system administrator to install or upgrade the license.”

If you are using retail licenses, verify that you have a valid Subscription Advantage or that your licenses expire after the burn-in date of the Citrix product you want to use.

To obtain the proper date in your license file you might need to return and reallocate it at My Citrix.

If you are using Not for Resale (NFR) or Investigational Use Only (IUO) licenses, request new license codes that are valid for use with Presentation Server 4.5.

If you are using an evaluation license issued before the release date of XenApp 5, contact a Citrix reseller to obtain a new evaluation license.

Other Citrix License Acquisition Error (500) Fixes

Can you telnet to port 27000 from the citrix server to the license server? This is the firewall port that citrix uses to get a citrix license.

Is there is firewall in-between your citrix server and citrix license server? If yes you will need to open firewall ports as when the license server talks back to the presentation server is uses random ports, we need to hard code the license server to use 1 port only and open this one port on the firewall.  For more information on this take a look at this  Article

Restart the citrix licensing services on your citrix license server or reboot the server.  Over time I have seen that citrix licenses are not dropped properly when a user logs off and a restart refreshes these licenses.
